Batter interference with catcher

Question
Hi, I'm a long time HS girls FP ump. Last nite in a game we had an unusual situation that we think we handled correctly but of course you always wonder as an ump later...situation: runner at 2nd, 1 out, batter takes ball four starts to proceed to first, runner at second attempts to steal third base, catcher comes up takes a lead step to throw and collides with walked batter who is outside the batter's box. We ruled the runner out, since the catcher could not make the throw due to the interference of the walked batter. We felt like we couldn't call the batter out since she was legally walked...so the runner nearest home plate was ruled out..and of course we would never be able to know if the catcher could have thrown the runner out since she was never given a chance to throw the ball. Did we do the right thing?
Answer
Mark,
I don't think I would have called anybody out at this point. The runner was doing what they were supposed to do, leave the box towards first base. There really isn't any interference here. Just a catcher running into a the batter.
If you were to call interference it would have to be on the batter. In this case you would need to call dead ball, rule the batter out and place the runner back on 2nd.
