Run counting after a double play has resulted in the 3rd out

2016/7/15 16:59:03

Question
We had an instance where the bases were loaded with one out.  The ball was hit to the left fielder who caught the ball on the fly.  The girl on third tagged up, but the girl on second ran once the ball was hit, and never went back to the base.  The other team threw the ball to the second baseman and she tagged the base for the third out.  The girl on third scored before the force play at second, does this run count.  The umpires in this game said the run was good.  Was it???  Thanks

Answer
Tony,

The correct call was made.  It is only considered a force out when a runner that is being forced to advance is put out by tagging the base the runner is heading to while in possession of the ball or actually tagging the runner while they are being forced to advance.

Although the out happens in the same manner.  The put out of the runner that did not tag up properly is not a force out.  It is an out from a live ball appeal of the runner leaving prior to the catch of the fly ball.  The third out was made on a timing play.

Every thing that happens before this out stands.
