field error?

Question
I keep stats for high school softball. The other night our center fielder who is right handed was running diagonally to her right after a pop fly that was hit to left center. She never touched the ball. She did make an attempt to catch by jumping but it went over her head. I scored this as a hit but a parent of another player was very upset that I didn't give the center fielder an error. If it wasn't a routine play and she never actually touched the ball, would this be an error on the center fielder?
Answer
Absolutely Not!
If the ball should have been caught with normal effort score an error regardless of whether the ball is touched or not. Conversely if the full effort is given and the ball skips off the end of the glove you still have a hit. Also, never score an error for a mental mistake. If you are not sure the benefit of the doubt to the batter.
Was the upset parent anyhow related to the pitcher:)?
