Illegal Pitch Call

Question
I am playing Adult Men's Slow Pitch softball. The new rule is the pitch arch from 6 to 10 feet. When the pitch exceeds 10 feet in arch, when and how should the umpire call the pitch illegal?
I was told last week, that no illegal call is made, but the ump will just call the pitch a ball after it crosses the plate. I think the ump should call illegal and give the delayed dead ball sign, giving the batter time to not swing (or swing if they wish).
Thanks.
Answer
HI TJ,
If this is ASA, yes the umpire mechanic is to both verbalize the IP loud enough for both the catcher and batter to hear and give the DDB signal. Since you said it was new 6-10 I assume this is ASA, if so give the District UIC and mention that some of their umpires need to be instructed on how to call an IP.
In some other orgs they do not verbalize the IP which I don't understand, I feel it puts the batter at a disadvantage especially w/ 2 strikes and ahead in the count where we tend to see more IPs than elsewhere in the count.
