Question
Hi my name is ralph terrazano my question is girl on second base pitcher pitches ball goes past catcher and out of play. umpire calls dead ball gives runner 3rd base and home, run scores asa rule book states past ball from pitcher goes out of -play  runner gets 1 base. so did the umpire make the right call. i am confused could you help me with this question.

thank you Ralph terrazao

Answer
Hi Ralph,

No the umpire did not make the correct call.

When a pitched ball goes out of play, the award is one base.

Where the umpire was likely confused is the award when a ball is thrown out of play by the defense after the offense puts the ball in play.  This would be a two base award from the where the runners are WHEN THE BALL WAS THROWN.
