Batter/Base Runner

2016/7/15 16:58:28

Question
I have been an armature umpire for 5+ years and I have never had this happen. Batter hits the ball down the first base line. The batter runs toward first and the ball bounces off of the ground up into the air. The ball was initially in fair territory but as it came down it hit the runners right foot, prior to hitting the ground, who was in foul territory running to the base. What is the correct call? Is the batter out or is it just a foul ball?  Thanks

Answer
Allen,

I think I understand your question and I believe the answer is foul ball.

Inside the diamond a ball is judged fair or foul based on where it is.  If it is first touched on or over fair territory, fair ball.  On or over foul territory foul ball.
