Lineup changes - injured player

2016/7/15 16:58:06

Question
This is a question from an ASA tournament. Team A has only nine available players. While playing defense, a player is injured. She is taken to the dugout to be examined. Team A's coach reports to the umpire that the player is unable to play and the umpire reports to the scorekeeper that the player is to be removed from the lineup. Before play resumes, however, the player and coaches determine the injury is not as serious as thought and that she is capable of continuing to play. The coach attempts to send the player back onto the field but is told by the umpire it is too late and she cannot reenter the game.My questions are: 1) should the player have been allowed to reenter the game; 2) was the coach of Team A REQUIRED to report the change to the lineup when the player was removed from the field, or could he wait until she was scheduled to bat to make the decision whether or not to remove her from the lineup; 3) if the coach did not report that the player was being removed from the lineup at the time she left the field, what would have been the recourse of the other team? Would they have had to wait for that player's spot to come up in the offensive lineup to raise the issue? Thank-you.

Answer
Hi James,

This is a case of umpiring by the book.  I'm NOT criticizing  just stating the fact.  As soon as the manager told the PU the player was coming out of the game the rule kicks in.  The player unless it is under the blood rule cannot return.

It has nothing to do with waiting for the bp to come up, if a player leaves the field during the game, somebody's got to tell the umpire something or the umpire going to talk to the coach.
