Question
My girls were on defense (shortstop & second baseman) there is a runner on second and third, no one on first with two outs. The batter hits the ball up the middle past the pitcher towards center on the left side of the bag (second) where both the shortstop & second baseman break for a play on the ball. There was a collision between the shortstop, trying to make a play on the ball and the runner who is trying to reach third by running out of the baseline to get there. Umpire time was called after the runner had reached third and the ball was thrown in by the center fielder. The runner from second was awarded third call made was for obstruction of the baseline by the fielder and in the umpire view the second baseman had the play on the ball. Umpire also made it clear to me that the runner can run to the outfield to avoid the ball. Is the runner safe or out? Or is the batter who hit the ball out because the fielders intent was the force at first ending the inning?  Alot went on during this play but it was not the first time it happened in the game. My first inning shortstop same exact situation except there is one out before the collision and my shortstop has still got the ball in her glove after the collision. This time umpire time is called and the runner on second trying to reach third is called out, but what about the batter who hit the ball and is now on first. Again shortstop easily makes the play at first if there is no collision.

Answer
Hi perry,

sounds like you had an obstruction call and also an interference call.  Just based on your facts because these are judgment calls this is a htbt situation.

Obstruction is a delayed dead ball so we allow it to play out, the runner can go whereever they need to to avoid getting hit by the ball

Interference is is dead ball so the runner is out and the b-r is awarded 1st base.  Doesn't matter if F6 could still make a play on the b-r
