Question
There was one out with runners on first and second. Ball hit to first baseman who stepped on base and threw to second. Ball arrived before runner, and umpire signaled runner out making it three outs. Defensive team began to exit field. Third base runner ran home and was not tagged by catcher. Second base runner began to run to third, and catcher threw to second but the ball went into center field. Runner on second ran home. The umpires counted both runs. After several "discussions" by the defensive coach, it was decided that one run would be counted, the second-base runner would return to second, and there would be two outs. Do you agree with this inexplicable decision?
Answer
Well Jan I tell you don't like it.
One of the hardest things to do as an umpire is how to fix things that occur after a booted call like you describe.
The best thing you can do in this situation is put the runner back on second and place the other runners where they would have been with a safe call at second with the defense finishing the play cleanly.
If the runner on third wouldn't have scored with the play finishing correctly I would have put them back on third.
