Question
After passing through first base if it is a double base does the base go away
technically talking?
If so if the base runner or batter-runner would go back to first base and
stand on the orange side and the first base man would tag them with the ball
would they be considered out or safe?
Answer
Katie,
In ASA, after the base is initially touched, it becomes one big base. The runner can touch any part of the base and be considered safe.
Tom
Katie,
ASA 2010 rulebook 8.2.m.5-7 are clear that the base becomes one big base.
5. On an errant throw pulling the defense off the white portion of the base into foul ground, the defense and the batter-runner can use either the white or contrasting color portion.
6. On balls hit to the outfield with no play on the batter-runner advancing to first base, the batter-runner may touch the white or contrasting color portion. Should the batter-runner return, the runner and the defense can use the white or contrasting color portion.
7. When tagging up on a fly ball, the white or contrasting color portion of the base may be used.
Nowhere in the the rule book does the colored portion of the base "disappear" as you claim. My district ASA Umpire in Chief agrees with my call as well. Why do you believe the colored portion of the base disappears?
You gave me all one's for my ratings, if you can, I would appreciate you changing those.
By the way, are you a coach?
