Foul ball caught but called out of play

2016/7/15 16:55:18

Question
If a long foul ball to right field is caught by the fielder and it's caught about 20 feet past the right field foul line, is that considered out of play and not and out?

Answer
Hi Alyson,

depends on the field and where the dead ball area is, on unenclosed fields it is usually marked.

If the player is in live ball territory and the fly ball is over dead ball territory and they reach over dbt that is a catch and an out.  If the defensive player is actually in dead ball territory it is not a legal catch.
