3rd out of inning runner leaving too early appealed

2016/7/15 16:55:03

Question
Runner on first and second, one out, fly to deep outfield for second out, both runners take and the runner on secord score on the SAC FLY, runner on first advances to second.

Defense appeals runner on first left too soon for third out.  Does the run count?  Pleae explain.

Answer
Hi Pete,

yes the run would count if R1 scored before the appeal of R2 at 1st (as what happened here)

This is never a "force out" rather it is an appeal of a  base left too early on a caught fly ball and is a "timing play".  Even though the appeal is the 3rd out of the inning the run scores.
