ASA Slow-Pitch Softball Fly Ball Infield Let Drop

2016/7/15 16:55:01

Question
Situation: Runner at 1st...1 Out....Pop up to 2nd Base...Batter Does Not Run...Catcher Yells Let it Drop...2nd Baseman catches Ball on 1st Bounce Throws to Second for 2nd Out and relays to 1st for 3rd Out...I let the Play Stand...Team at bat wanted me to call Travesty of the Spirit of the Game...I thought not running was also a travesty of the game...so I did not buy into that argument...after the game the coach apologized for yelling at me but still thought I was wrong...I explained to him that when I played for many years that was a standard play if the batter did not run and the infield fly rule was not in effect....Thank You!!!

Answer
Hi Al,

In ASA there is no rule about letting a ball drop (unless you actually catch it and then intentionally drop it) and turning a DP or getting the lead runner.  It is legal and you made the right call.

The coach has a bitch w/his player, not you.
