Decision on Play

Question
We play slow-pitch 12 softball.  We play ASA rules. Runner on first base.  Batter hits ball to left-center field.  Outfielder throws to second to try to force runner from first going to second.  Throw is wide and rolls toward first base.  Runner on second goes to third and batter goes to second.  Ball continues to roll past first base and past fence (out of bounds).  Does the 1st base runner going to third get home and does the batter get third base?  Thank you for you opinion.

Answer
Hi gene,

the runners would get 2 bases from their position (last base touched) at the time of the throw.  Since you said F8 was trying for a force on R1, I assume R1 had not yet touched 2nd at the time of the throw.  If so R1 gets 3rd, B2 gets 2nd.

I assume the offense might bitch on this one but that's the correct call.

If R1 had touched 2nd at the time of the throw the award would be home and if B2 had not yet touched 1st, that award is still 2nd.  Touched 1st at the time...award is 3rd.
