Question
When a batter walks and goes past first base can they be tagged out.
Answer
Hi george,
on a walk a batter becomes a b-r the same as if they hit the ball. A b-r may "over-run" 1st turn right or left and proceed directly back to 1st w/out liability to be put out. Of course if they "round" 1st that's a different story and they are liable to be put out. This RS deals only with over-running which I believe is in the intent of your question.
RS 37. OVER-RUNNING FIRST BASE.
After over-running first base, the batter-runner may legally turn to their left or right when returning to the base. If any attempt is made to advance to second base, regardless of whether the runner is in fair or foul territory, they are liable for an appeal out if tagged with the ball by a defensive player while off the base.
