Question
My question is the signals I should give to my pitcher. I have tryouts next week, and I'm a freshman. I didn't get to play 14 and under softball for the past two years cause my mom has been sick. So I haven't gotten to learn the signals to give my pitcher, can you help me?
Answer
Morgan,
Don't worry about this too much. Just talk to the pitcher and ask what she throws.
Typically a fastball is one finger, change-up two, drop three, rise four. She may throw a screwball or curveball.
Talk to the pitcher find out what they are used to and talk to her about where she wants you to set up.
Typical set up is on either edge of the plate at the knees for the fast ball. Outside edge at the knees for a change and drop. Inside edge and high for the rise. Screw ball inside, curve ball off the plate outside.
The most important thing is to communicate with each pitcher you are working with. The better you make them look, the better you look!
Good Luck!
