Question
Mr. Mielke  my coach tells me i need to break my hips durning my swing. Are there any drills out there to help me over come this.

Answer
Ashley,

I am not positive about the term "break my hips".  If it means getting your hips through your swing, then I understand.  Your belly button should be facing the pitcher when you make contact with the ball.

Check out this video  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LMdI2tuLtA&feature=related

It shows a baseball player, but the concept is the same for baseball and softball.

About five minutes into the video, the narrator talks about something called the "short three drill".  There is a very short demonstration.  The drill focuses on starting the swing with your hips while keeping the bat stationary relative to your body.  You do this drill with the bat against the outside of the shoulder.  Kind of where your arm attaches to your shoulder.

Also make sure that as you rotate your hips your right foot rotates so you end up with just your toe touching the ground.  I assume you are right handed.  If your back foot stays pinned to the ground you will never get your hips through.

I hope this helps
Tom Mielke
