Question
What's the rule for putting a player into the game, who, in previous innings, was a designated hitter? Also, isn't the rule that all roster players have at bats, even if they are sitting out an inning?
Answer
Hi Buddy,
Let me do the best I can to help you but in reverse. There isn't any rule in ASA or high school that requires all roster players to have an at bat. I do believe that Little League requires that all the players on the team receive at least one at bat per game. You can have some local rules that either require or allow you to bat the entire roster, but I can not help you with those rules.
The rule I believe that you are asking about is the designated player (offense only)/Flex player (defense only). This essentially gives you a line-up of 10 players, with only nine batting. It looks like the designated hitter rule from baseball.
Any nine of the ten players can be on defense at the same time. I hope this helps. It is just the tip of the iceberg with this rule.
I hope this helps.
