Question
runner on second runs into shortstop fielding ground ball, runner is called out, third out of inning, what is the official scoring for the batter who hit the ball this is high school fastpitch softball in SC
Answer
Rob,
This is a judgement call. If the batter would have been safe without the interference, then credit a hit and the shortstop with a putout. This is according the National Fastpitch Coaches Association scoring guide. Alternatively, and this is not in the scoring guide, the play would have to be scored as a fielder's choice if a routine play would have put the runner out.
About two years ago, I answered the same question here but for some reason used the NCAA scoring guide. The NCAA scoring guide said this is a hit because of the interference. There is no criteria on whether a normally played ball would have put the batter out at first. The SS is credited with a put-out.
For high school go with the NFCA guide. You can find that guide at http://nfca.org.ismmedia.com/ISM2/MultimediaManager/ATEC.pdf
Thanks
