Question
I have coached high school softball and volleyball for over 20 years. Now that my daughter is on a high school softball team, here is my question. There are consistently 6 girls that sit the bench and referred to as "the idiots". Throughout the game I yell for the bench to play....."come on pine forest-play your bench". I was told last night that if I didn't shut up that I would be ejected or have the police be called to remove me. Is this possible?
Answer
Hi Mellisa,
sure it's possible, anything is possible. I have a number of concerns here, first and foremost someone......a coach (which I doubt or they wouldn't be coaching very long).............other parents,.......... spectators?????? are calling HS girls that happen to be reserves "the idiots".
That has to be stopped IMMEDIATELY! If it's coming from the stands and other parents don't want to handle it (I know I'd be verbally all over that person(s)) go to the coach or AD, I can't believe this would be tolerated. Since you're an experienced coach I would think you also would be all over this.
Since I'm not at the game I don't know how disruptive you are. There is a limit as you know and depending on who said that to you maybe you're walking the line. If it's the coach or AD who have the authority to ask you to voluntarily leave or be escorted if you won't, I would probably listen and perhaps evaluate my behavior. You know a coach in HS can play who they want and if you feel they are being unfair or disagree w/ their policies a private consult with the AD and/or coach seems to me to be the best solution.
As an umpire I generally ignore spectators unless they are directing abusive comments at coaches or players, using serious profanity or racial comments and a few other major things. As a UIC I will handle it, (and yes they can leave)as an umpire I want the coach, AD, TD or UIC to handle it.
Hope this helps
