Question
Two outs, bases empty, grounder to pitcher, throw to first. First baseman scoops ball up and shows to first base ump. Runner called out, both teams go into their dugouts, drop off equipment, line and start doing thank you line. Losing coach, appeals to home ump that ball was bobbled!? Imps confer and declare bobble did occur. Teams get equipment on and game continues. How many rules, if any are violated?
Answer
Hi Steve,
Well there's maybe a couple as I think you had an inkling.
1) an appeal cannot be made when all infielders have left fair territory on their way to the team area. Sounds like that happened here
2)When the umpires have left the field of play...now you don't tell me this and maybe it's not the case but while we never run off the field at the end of the game, we do move along. For the umpires to still be on the field when when the teams are lining up post game seems to me to be a little hanging around too long. My partner and I are usually off the field way before that happens.
