Question
ASA 2 umpire system
which judgement calls can be overturned when the plate umpire calls strike, ball, safe, out, fair, foul as well as if the base umpire calls fair, foul, safe, out ? is there ever a scenario when a strike call can be overturned? thank you
Answer
Hi Tom,
There is a rule...under no circumstances will any umpire seek to reverse a decision made by another umpire, nor will any umpire criticize or interfere with the duties of their associate unless asked to do so. So an umpire THAT MADE the call can go to their partner if they feel they were blocked out, didn't see a bobbled ball or pulled foot, etc. If it up to that umpire if they feel they need help and any change made would be based on new information.
Somehow on your strike q, I feel you may be talking about a checked swing. If the PU calls a strike we never go for help, we saw it it is a strike. However if a ball is called we may go to our partner to ask if a "swing" was attempted.
In a worst case scenario the PU may by rule rectify any situation in which the reversal of an umpire's decision places a b-r, a runner or the defense in jeopardy. This would obviously not apply to balls, strikes, normal calls of safe, outs, etc. and is a rare call.
