Bunt attempt popped up

Question
Sir
At an 8th grade Ohio High School Athletics governed girls softball game, we had a situation in which a batter with less than two strikes made a bunt attempt and popped it up. The ball did not pop up higher than the batters head. The catcher caught the ball in the air. The umpire called it a foul tip and counted it as a strike. There was discussion that it was not a foul tip due to the bunt attempt and should have been an out. Could you please advise what the correct call should have been and where I would be able to find it in the rules.
Thank you
Answer
JP,
A foul tip is defined as a ball that goes directly (direct line) from the bat to the catcher's glove. A foul ball is a ball that is touched by a player while it is on or over foul territory and is not caught inside the diamond. Outside the diamond if the balls first contact with the ground is in foul territory you have a foul ball as well. Obviously balls hit out of play foul are foul balls as well.
Any time you have a ball that is caught before it touches the ground and it is not a foul tip as I have described, you have a caught fly ball. There is no such thing as a ball that is caught in the air being ruled a foul ball.
In your situation, caught fly ball, batter out, any runners free to advance if they tag up.
In the high school book you will look in section 2, definitions, to find the exact verbage what a foul ball is as well as a foul tip.
Hope this helps
