Batting out of order / sub.

Question
A question came up about the one I sent to you on 5-3-11. I know that batter-3 was injured and a substitute was put in. The substitute was put in at the bottom of the line up, not in the number-3 slot. Now if we get to that batter is this legal or do we have batting out of order or do we change the line up and put him in the correct batting slot. Sorry for the confusion. another question.
When the coach comes over to make a change and we the (umpire) know that the coach is making an illegal substitution. Do we let him know or do we let it happen an see if the opposing team catches it.
Thx
RC

Answer
When you get to the person that was inserted in the bottom of the line up and they bat, you have BOO.

If I am umpiring, especially at lower levels, if I notice it I would tell the coach.  A little preventative umpiring goes a long way to making the game run smooth.
