Batting out of turn

Question
I play in a coed slow pitch league governed by ASA rules and regulations. Last night we played a team and not all of the batters had numbers on their jerseys therefore making it almost impossible to keep up with their lineup. They had a girl up to bat and she took 2 balls when they realized she was batting out of turn. She has no number on. The umpire allowed them to swap batters in the middle of the at bat with no penalty. Is that correct?
Answer
Hi Tricia,
Thank you for your question. The umpire handled your batting out of order scenario correctly, per ASA Rule 7-2. When an incorrect batter is discovered during the midst of their at bat, the correct batter merely takes their place and assumes the ball/strike count. As well, the advances of runners and runs scored stand.
What an utter nightmare for the umpires and scorekeepers to track players who aren't wearing numbers. That team needs a sponsor!
