Hit by throw

Question
Hello!
At my daughter's playoff game today, a player running from 2nd to 3rd base was hit in the helmet by a throw from the catcher. She was more then halfway to third when this occurred. The game was stopped by the other team, the umpire said she had no idea what the call would be..but the other coach said it was a dead ball. I am very interested to hear what you say should have happened. I thought a ball becomes dead when the runner is hit by a hit ball while running? And is still live if hit by a throw? Please advise.
Thanks!
Jenn

Answer
Hello Jenn,

Thank you for your questions.  Your scenario was a doozy!  Will you please supply me with more information about the play before I answer your questions?  1) Was the runner injured?  Did she drop like a sack of cement, or did she keep on running like nothing happened?  2) Who stopped the game, the offense or the defense?  If you answer these two questions then I can answer your questions more easily.

Thank you, Scott Kelly
