Dead Ball Rule

14U Girls Fastpitch Game:
Bases Loaded, less than two outs.
Batter hits pitch that is grounded between 1st & 2nd base.
Runner that is running from 1st to 2nd is hit directly with the batted ball.
Umpire declares "dead ball".
Runner hit with ball is called out.
All other runners are allowed to advance, including runner at 3rd, who is allowed to score.    
What's the correct ASA ruling and is there any difference with the NFHS interpretation of this ruling?

Hi Joe,

Thank you for your question.  Well, the umpire didn't quite nail this one!  Only you know which parts he got right and wrong, since you were there and I wasn't.  Simply, the dead ball, runner out, and advanced runners/scored runner cannot co-exist.  Let me explain:

If the ball hit the runner before it passed an infielder (excluding the pitcher), or after it passed an infielder but another fielder had an opportunity to make an out, then the ball is dead, the runner who was hit is out, the other runners return, and the batter-runner is placed on 1B.

If the ball hit the runner after it passed an infielder (excluding the pitcher), and another fielder didn't have an opportunity to make an out, then the ball remains live and the batter-runner and runners are free to advance at their own risk.

The ASA rule in question is 8-7-K.  The NFHS rule in question is 8-6-11.  They are written almost EXACTLY identically.
