Question
This situation is from an ASA adult slow pitch softball game. The bases are loaded and the batter grounds to third. The third baseman fields the ball and steps on third and throws home catching th runner in a run down between home and third. The runner from second that was called out and continues to run as if he was not out. The level of play is low in this league and the runner may not have known he was already out at the time so there may have been no intention to cause confusion. The confusion causes the defense to throw to tag the runner previously called out at third between third and second instead of trying for the runner between home and third. Should this play be ruled runner interference resulting in the runner between home and third being ruled out as well?
Answer
Hi Scott,
A runner who continues to run after being put out and draws a throw could be considered interference. Intent is not a factor.
Usual caveat, I would like to see it, but based on your play I probably would have interference and the runner closest to home would also be out.
