Disabilities Act-Slow pitch softball

Question
Rule 4.2.D says, "When a physically challenged player plays defense only, they will be listed as the FLEX and placed last in the lineu-up. .....When using a FLEX, it must be made known prior to the start of the game."
Does this mean the disabled player may only be a starter? If the disabled player doesn't start, he can't play? In our situation, the disabled player wants to be the back-up pitcher, but the way the rule is written that doesn't seem to be allowed.
Answer
Hi Mark,
Most umpires never see the ADA on the field. It does look like that's the way it is written but there's no reason using regular rules you can't legally sub in your player on defense for the person who bats 10th or 11th next inning, sub in a batter when it comes up and then re-enter your player. I think you could get up to 3-4 innings, maybe more, out of that if they want to back up.
I know you probably think there should be a better way and maybe there should be, but above will work if you want to get the player in the game.
