Question
If a batter hits a ground ball to the first base person who is playing in about ten feet as protection for a bunt, do rules allow the batter to run two feet out of the baseline to avoid a tag by the first base player?

Answer
Hi Larry,

When a runner is attempting to advance or retreat AND a defensive player has the ball and is attempting a tag on the runner a "basepath" is created.  A basepath is a direct line between the runner's position and the base.  A runner may deviate 3' on either side of that basepath in order to avoid a tag.

A "baseline" is an imaginary direct line between the bases and pretty much has nothing to do with anything.
