Softball Call

Question
I watch a softball game recently. In the game, there were runners on second and third base. The batter had 2 strikes and 2 balls on her. The batter runs to first base after receiving the 3 ball. Each base runners jogged to the next base, the one on 3rd base scores and the runner at 2nd moved over to 3rd base. The catcher stood near the plate with the ball and with a confused look on her face. The umpire had the batter to return to the plate to finish her at bat. The coach came out and argued the call that all the runners should be return to the original bases. The Plate umpire had all the runners return back so the other coach argued the umpire call and after a meeting with both umpires. The umpire changed his decision and allow the runners to move up and let the run count. What was the proper call in this situation? Count the run or not?
Answer
Charles,
Count the run! It is up to the defense to know the situation and react accordingly. If the offense makes a "mistake", it is still the defenses responsibility to know what is going on. In my opinion, teaching these trick plays is "bush league", but it is legal.
Something like this won't work at higher levels of play. At the levels it will work at, practice time is better spent on teaching softball instead of trick plays.
