Slow Pitch Shortfielder

Question
In slow pitch softball can the extra "shortfielder" line up in the dirt of the infield making 7 infielders?

Answer
Hi Chris,

Yes, it's called "5 man" and as long as it's not co-ed you can position your defense anywhere you want. It would be legal to have all your defense for example line up between 2nd and 3rd base and none in the outfield if you wanted.

In ASA the rules only state that all defensive players (exc F2)must be in fair territory at the time of the pitch and not in (distracting to) the batter's field of vision.

With the right players "5" man has been used for a number of years.  In fact in '93 and '95 my team won the MASA SP Class "A" state championships running only 5 man.  Of course your 3 outfielders have to be gazelles and occasionally you'll give up a gapper.
