Question
During a high school softball game a runner was called out as she was running the base line and the short stop was attempting to field the ball. The ball was successfully fielded, but the runner was called out due to unintentionally interfering with the defensive player. Is the interference judgement intentional or unintentional based on the field ump/home ump or is the runner out now matter the interference?
Answer
Jimmy,
The umpires do not judge intent, only what happens, even if the ball is successfully fielded. If the umpire, either one, sees interference the runner is out, the batter is awarded first, all other runners return to the last based touched prior to the interference unless forced to advance by the batter.
All of the responsibility to avoid interference is on the runner.
