Triple Play?

2016/7/15 16:42:52

Question
Tom,
My daughter plays 12 and under fast pitch softball.  She plays at the shortstop position.  With a runner on third and second and no outs, the ball was hit foul to the third base side.  She ran and caught the ball well before it contacted the fence.  The runners on second and third advanced one base, obviously with the runner on third crossing home.  After the catch was made, the runner's did not return to their previous bases and my daughter tagged third and then second.  The umps called it as a triple play.  Was this a good call?

Thanks for your time,

  Jon

Answer
Absolutely!

A fly ball that is caught in foul territory is treated the same as a fly ball caught in fair territory.  The runners can advance after they tag-up.  If they don't tag-up they are liable to be put out on appeal which your daughter did!
