Home Plate fair or foul

2016/7/15 16:41:54

Question
Girls Fast Pitch Softball

If a batted ball hits home plate and continues into fair territory, is it fair or foul?  I always thought that the plate was considered fair territory.

Answer
Hi Michelle,

Home plate is in fair territory, if you look at the foul lines they meet at the back tip of home plate.  All bases on the playing field are in fair territory.

A batted ball that hits home plate and is then touched or settles in fair territory or passes a base in fair territory is a fair ball.  A batted ball that settles on home plate is a fair ball.
