umpire mechanics

Question
Played two games last night and we had two different umpires. each stayed in the same spot between 1st and 2nd. on stayed near the infield dirt and the other stay another 20 feet away.
talked to UIC and he said ASA has changed the mechanics where the base umpire stays put - I asked so they never move in to button hook on plays at second? they nver move insied to trail the runner to 3rd/ he confirmed again they no longer move....
Is this correct with ASA now?
had a play at 2nd where they were to far away and blocked from seeing the call.....Plays at 3rd where nobody moved to better see the play.
When I umpired we moved and trailed the runner. Have not umped in almost 3 years.
Answer
Hi kerry,
not correct, we still umpire with the inside/outside theory, stay outside if the ball is in the infield and move inside if the ball goes outside the diamond. This is critical to keeping all 4 elements in front of the umpire. We still button hook inside the diamond on balls hit to the outfield
Depending on the situation at 3rd either the HP umpire moves up to cover or the BU comes inside and hustles their butt to 3rd.
With nobody on, 1st only, 3rd only or 1st and 3rd, the BU if possible should be off F4's left shoulder and slightly behind
2nd only, 1st and 2nd, 2nd and 3rd or bases loaded, if possible the BU should be off f4's right shoulder and slightly behind.
Of course the BU needs to be able to modify those positions depending on the infield defensive setup.
