Question
Is it legal for a pitcher to be totally airborne while pitching the softball. Not a grow hop. The whole body comes off of the ground while the pitch is being thrown. Pictures taken of pitcher showing she is airborne. I asked umpires about it and they say that she is not crow hopping and pivot toe is pointed down. You can see that her whole body is at least 3 to 6 inches in the air above the height of the rubber. Please clarify for me. Thank you.
Answer
In all of women's fastpitch there is no set of rules that allow a pitcher to be airborne. The pitcher must always have a foot in contact with the ground. The only leeway an umpire might give on this is to allow the the pitchers foot to stay level with the ground if there is a large whole in front of the pitcher's plate.
The ruling the umpire is giving is correct for men's fastpitch.
