Stopping on your way to 1st

2016/7/15 16:41:01

Question
"The question is two fold:

1) Can a runner who has hit a batted ball stop (even momentarily) on her way to first base?  And if she does, is she out?

2) Can a runner who draws a WALK stop (even momentarily) on her way to first base?  And if she does, is she out?

Thank you.

-Coach Jason"

Answer
Jason,

The answer to both questions 1 and 2, yes the batter/runner may stop on their way to first base.  This has no effect on the game.

In situation one if the batter/runner stops then moves back towards home plate TO AVOID OR DELAY a tag, the play is called dead, the batter runner is out and any base runners return to the last base touched.
