appeal play

2016/7/15 16:40:58

Question
QUESTION: ASA slow pitch:

1 down runners on 1st and 3rd.

Batter hits fly to center field both runners tag, but the runner on first clearly leaves early before the ball is caught for the 2nd out.

Runner on 3rd scores; while runner on first is now on 2nd.
Defensive team makes proper appeal on the runner who left first EARLY for the 3rd out.

Does the runner on 3rd run count?

ANSWER: Hi pete,

yes, R1's run does count as this is NOT a force out but a "timing" play.

QUESTION: You say timing play, but the appeal comes AFTER the run has scored. So how is this a timing play?

Answer
Hi Pete,
because RS 1 K Tag Ups calls it that...when a runner leaves a base too soon...., this is considered a time play and not a force out, all runs scored in advance of the the appealed runner and prior to the legal appeal count.

It means that at the "time" of the appeal (not when it occurred)if the runner in advance of the runner appealed had already crossed the plate the run counts, if not, NO.
