Runner called out

2016/7/15 16:40:49

Question
Batter bunts the ball to the third baseman. She makes a throw but the batter beat the throw.First baseman throws the ball back to the pitcher who was in the circle. The batters momentum put her about 20 ft past first base.As she returned toward first base, without returning to the bag,she broke and ran to second base. The Umpire called her out because he said she had committed to returning to first base. She was about !0ft from the bag. This happened in the 10u Alabama ASA State Tournament.  Thanks,Butch

Answer
Hi Butch,

Under the LBR after overrunning 1st, if she turned right she must return non stop to 1st, she has no choice.  If she turned left and moved back toward the infield in any direction except directly toward 2nd, she must return non stop to 1st. She was properly called out. Good call by the umpire.

Even at 10U they need to understand the basics of the LBR.
