Clarification

Question
Question for you:

Runner on first base 1 out. Deep fly hit to right, misplayed by the right fielder. Batter is right on runner's heels due to waiting to tag. They head home home one after the other. Catcher gets ball in time to make a play. Runner slides but misses home (no tag). Batter slides in safe before the tag. Runner goes back to touch home after the play. Who is out, who scores?

Super quirky play but happened last night & my umpire wanted clarification today.

Answer
Hi Dave,

Well they both score, for now, as a runner who passes a base is considered to have touched the base unless appealed.

Now when B2 scores, R1 cannot legally go back and touch HP.  If appealed by the defense R1 would now be called out and B2 scores.
