Question
We played a game today where the opposing team's first base coach called "safe" each time one of his runners met with one of our base players holding the ball. He would yell "safe" louder than and before the ump would call. So after the first inning of this I approached the base coach about his antics and explained we have an ump to make the calls and that it was not his job to out do the ump. I was the one that ended up getting a warning from the ump for making a comment to that base coach. Totally wrong in my opinion as the base coach continued as usual for the rest of the game. Only justice was the end result. We won the game. Are there rules governing if any coach can call out loudly in reference to a play at a base?
Thanks.
Eric.
Answer
Hi Eric,
A base coach is only to address their own players. You should have stated your concerns to the umpire. It's up to the BU or PU but I wouldn't tolerate this as it is a distraction. I would warn the coach and then...if they kept it up.
