high school softball pitchers
Question
I have noticed that coaches will use the same pitcher game after
game, and during a game they will rarely "go to the pen". What
is the thinking behind this? Are the concepts of rotation and the
reliever only a baseball thing?
Answer
Hi Craig
On softball travel teams it's not unusual for one windmill softball pitcher to pitch several games in one day. There are two main reasons for this so I could see how it would carry over the high school ball.
First: Biomechanically a correct underhand windmill motion is a more natural and stable position for the shoulder, elbow, and body vs. overhand baseball pitching. It's also less taxing on endurance. Thus the risk of injury or a pitcher tiring in the late innings is greatly reduced for softball windmill pitchers.
Second: Many teams have one 揂ce?pitcher that stands out above the other pitchers on the team. In weekend tournaments games are routinely low scoring and often decided by one run. Coaches and teammates depend on the Ace pitcher to carry them to a championship. In high school games coaches are reluctant make a pitching change late in the game if they feel the best pitcher is already on the field.
If the injury risk wasn't so high for extended overhand pitching I suspect baseball pitchers would be pitching more innings and/or multiple games.
