Scoring a dropped third strike
Question
Larry,
On a dropped third strike in which the batter safely reaches first base, how shoud it be scored? I am thinking there's a strike out (K) and an E2. I have read the rules several times and can't find the answer. I've also asked several coaches and umpires and get mixed responses. I look forward to your response.
Tahnks,
John
Answer
Illegal pitches, wild pitches, passed balls or hit batters are not recorded as errors, even if more than one base is gained from the initial misplay.
No error is charged if other runners advance on a dropped third strike when the batter is out. No error is charged when the batter is not out. A passed ball or wild pitch is charged.
The pitcher is credited with a strikeout even if the batter reaches first on the dropped third strike rule. Score KPB or KWP, whichever the case.
