Ball pitched in dirt
Question
This question pertains to ASA fast pitch 12-U girls. If a pitch lands in the dirt before reaching home plate, and the batter swings and misses the ball, is it a ball or a strike?
Answer
Thanks for the question!
As long as the pitch wasn't intentionally thrown into the dirt it is still a strike. Same as if it went 10 feet above her head or 10 feet behind her.
ASA Rule 7 Section 4 "A STRIKE IS CALLED BY THE UMPIRE"
C. For each pitch legally swung at and missed by the batter. (In fast pitch and slow pitch w/ stealing the ball remains live.)
