snap on fastpitch softball

Question
Dear Coach Antley, My 9 year old daughter was told by a pitching
coach that
she has a natural turnover on her snap/release and she is pitching that
way
(successfully) rather than using the up-snap.

My question: is this more damaging to developing elbows and wrists?

She pitches at about 38 mph. and only about four innings a week.

Answer
Hello Laura

If all the other pitching mechanics are good then a natural turnover shouldn't be a problem and it well may turn into an asset later.  My daughter had a natural turnover because of a weak wrist but she never developed any physical problems. However she did develop an awesome rise ball later because of it.

Yes you want to be careful since she is under 12 years old and still physically growing. I wouldn't be too concerned but closely monitor her progress and if she ever develops any soreness, stop and reevaluate her mechanics.
