is a base a safe zone?
Question
ASA slow pitch mens, runner on 3rd,standing in fair territory, is hit with a line drive while on 3rd. Ump ruled him out. Defense was behind R3. I believe that baseball rules would say R3 is out, but was the ump right in softball?
Answer
Thanks for the question!
In softball, if the contact with the ball was over fair territory, in this instance, the ball would be dead, the batter would be awarded first base (scored as a fielder's choice), and runners would move only if pushed. No outs would occur. Next batter up. If the runner is off the base... that's went they're out.
If the contact os over foul ground, it's just a foul ball.
I hope this helps answer your question. If not please reply.
