Rain out during softball playoff game

Hi Dr. Mark R. Ambrose,

I play for a fast pitch men's Wall Street Softball League in NYC and we had a situation that came up as a result of a rain out in a middle of a playoff game and need your expertise in resolving this situation.  According to our league, they follow ASA rules and unfortunately, neither team including the umpire did not have a copy of the official rulebook. My question to you is, the game was called at the top half of the seventh inning and the team was still at bat and the game was called due to the weather, do you erase what transpired that inning and start over being that the top half of that inning was not concluded.  In other words, if the team the was at bat on that top half of the inning scored 7 runs but the final out was not registered, will that 7 runs be erased and the inning will start over or do you revert back to where you left off, in this case, runners on base with one out...or will it be scored as an official game and the game won't need to be concluded..I would appreciate your expert advise in this matter...Thank you..David Coqueran

Hi David,

If this was just a regular game the game would be over and the team ahead at the end of 6 would be the winner.  Unless you have rules or some understanding to the contrary a good case can be made for this scenerio.

In tournament play we do everything possible to have a 7 inning game (sometimes it's not possible) and it is up to the TD to decide what they can do.

If the tournament or playoff director decides to continue the game it should resume at the exact point it was stopped.
