runner on third base
Question
ASA softball
bases loaded none out. batter hits a fair ball down thirdbase line runner remains in contact with base and is struck in fair territory before the fielder has a chance to field it. Not intentional but on the base. ball rolls into foul territory all runners advance and are safe at next base. What is your opionion runner on base hit with fair ball. Answer
Hi Walter,
This is not my opinion, it is by rule....
If the closest defensive player is in front of the base the runner is in contact with, the ball is live. (This is more common in fast pitch than slow pitch)
If the closest defensive player is behind the base the runner is in contact with, the ball is dead. (More common in slow pitch)
If the ball is dead the batter is awarded a base hit (1st base) and only runners that are forced are advanced.
Be safe out there!
