Question
Please explain the look back rule to me.
Answer
Hi Jesse,
The look back rule is basically (this is a short version, you need to get a rule book or take a coaches class if you want to understand the different scenarios the look back rule can apply or not apply to)
when a runner is legitimately off base after a pitch or as a result of a batter completing their turn at bat and is stationary when the pitcher has the ball in the circle, the runner must immediately attempt to advance to the next base or immediately return to the base left. The responsibility is completely on the runner.
The look back rule does not go into effect for all runners until the batter-runner touches 1st base or has been declared out and the pitcher has control of the ball in the circle.
Failure to immediately return or proceed after the pitcher has the ball in the circle will result in the runner being declared out.
Once a runner has returned or stops at any base for any reason the runner will be declared out if they leave that base. (there are a # of exceptions to this rule such as a play being made by the pitcher on a runner)
If a runner is moving toward a base (other than 1st base) when the pitcher receives the ball in the circle the runner may stop once then immediately advance or return. Faking will result in the runner being out.
As I stated there is more to this rule than I can give you here.
